The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Bridge Maintenance, has a full-time vacancy for a Lift Bridge Worker I - II position.

Summary:

Lift Bridge Worker I: To perform responsible work in the operating of mechanical and electronic lift bridge gates on the Memorial Bridge, Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, Hampton River Bridge and/or the Little Harbor Bridge to control both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. On occasion, will be required to supervise part-time Lift Bridge Worker I’s.

Lift Bridge Worker II : To perform responsible work in the operating of mechanical and electronic lift bridge gates on the Memorial Bridge, Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, Hampton River Bridge and/or the Little Harbor Bridge to control both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Performs the duties of a Lift Bridge Worker III in his/her absence.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS : Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Lift Bridge Worker I :

Education/Experience:8th grade education

License/Certification: None

Other Requirements:

  1. Must receive a negative result on a pre-employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with the Department of Transportation’s Policy on Safety Sensitive Positions

  2. Must be able to participate in drug and alcohol testing program for safety sensitive positions at the Department of Transportation

  3. Must have ability to climb and work from ladders or scaffolds and must be physically able to remove snow. Must be able to maintain and operate snow blowers.

For promotion from the 53-6010 Bridge and Lock Tenders-1 job title to the 53-6010 Bridge and Lock Tenders-3 job title, the eligibility requirements in Personnel Rule 303.08 Broad Group Level Advancement must be satisfied.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Lift Bridge Worker II:

Education/Experience: Equivalent combination of 2 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must include at least one year in construction, industrial/manufacturing, maritime, mechanical or heavy equipment/vehicle repair, industrial crane or hoist operation, or lift bridge maintenance.

License/Certification: Valid driver’s license

  1. Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards.

  2. Must receive a negative result on a pre-employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with the Department of Transportation’s Policy on Safety Sensitive Positions

  3. Must be able to participate in drug and alcohol testing program for safety sensitive positions at the Department of Transportation

AFTER-HIRE REQUIREMENTS: Must complete the lift operation training program, pass the lift bridge operation written test administered by the Department of Transportation, and pass a practical exam at the controls of the bridge(s) assigned within 3 months after hire.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lift Bridge Worker I:

Maintains a constant watch by sight and ear for signals from approaching vessels and stops traffic with either electronic or mechanical gates, or by flagging. Maintains communications with supervisor via portable radio when bridge lift is taking place and notifies other Lift Bridge Workers of any bridge related issues as appropriate.

Removes snow from lift span of bridge and from sidewalks, catwalks, or parking areas as directed and salts or sands as required.

Removes rubbish or debris from walks and roadway of bridge daily. Stocks the supplies needed to maintain the lift bridge workers’ houses and maintain the same.

Paints and maintains lift bridge workers’ houses as required. Paints bridge rail and other areas as directed. Assists and/or makes minor repairs to the bridge, provides traffic control for maintenance crew, reports repair needs, and provides assistance in performing repairs as directed.

Performs or assists in cleaning, changing oil and greasing of all bridge operating systems. Maintain bridge lighting systems and repair other minor electric components.

Performs routine or daily inspections of all safety and operational features of bridge. Reports deficiencies and repair needs to supervisor and maintains records of same.

Performs security inspections of the bridge structures via security walks, and by the operation and use of the closed circuit camera system.

Is trained and certified to operate a lift bridge exercising all established procedures as a Lift Bridge Worker III for periods of time as necessary. This temporary work includes but is not limited to: knowledge of Coast Guard regulations, understanding and operating the lift bridge in both normal and auxiliary modes, supervision of personnel and maintenance of records.
